The Origin

V-Europe, established in 2016 by VoT (Victims of Terrorism), emerged as a vital force in fostering solidarity and mutual support among victims of terrorism in Belgium and beyond. For the first time in Belgian history, V-Europe provided a safe space for VoT to connect, share their experiences, and find solace in a shared understanding of their unique struggles. This sense of community offered much-needed emotional support and a platform for collective advocacy. 

In January 2017, V-Europe boldly presented their concerns to the Belgian parliamentary enquiry commission investigating the March 22, 2016 attacks. Their testimony sent shockwaves through Belgium and resonated across Europe, bringing to light the plight of victims and the shortcomings of existing support systems. This public revelation highlighted the urgent need for improved communication and information exchange to prevent misunderstandings and ensure timely and appropriate support for victims. As a result of their impactful advocacy, V-Europe became a key communication partner and interlocutor for official bodies. They played a pivotal role in advocating for victims' rights and well-being, working tirelessly to implement these rights in collaboration with policymakers. 

V-Europe's efforts have been instrumental in shaping policies that address the needs of victims, ensuring they receive the recognition and support they deserve. Through their dedication, V-Europe has not only supported individual victims but also contributed to a broader understanding and improvement of victim support systems across Europe. The organization promotes best practices for providing assistance, protection, and support to victims, and collaborates with governments, international organizations, and civil society actors to develop and implement comprehensive support systems. V-Europe also recognizes the importance of prevention in mitigating the impact of terrorism, engaging in initiatives aimed at preventing radicalization and violent extremism, promoting social cohesion, and fostering a culture of peace and tolerance.
